Hypnosis and its derivative, hypnotherapy, have been the focus of several misconceptions created by popular imagination. Some consider them to be some type of spell while others refuse to even recognize their existence. Following are some of the popular myths about hypnosis and the truth behind them.

Hypnosis has no link with any sort of dark arts. Psychology and several other scientific disciplines have a crucial role to play in the hypnotic procedure, and it is very simple to acquire and practice. People refuse to acknowledge hypnosis even after watching participants effectively experiencing its power in public sessions. They argue that those who can be hypnotized are somehow weak mentally. But that is not true at all. Hypnosis can be exercised on anyone irrespective of his or her mental strength.

Another myth is that hypnosis is an alternate state of consciousness, which again is a big misconception. An individual under hypnosis does not get shut off from the outside world, but stays completely aware of the happenings around him. During the hypnotic state, the subject calms down entirely and is hence able to concentrate fully on the inputs provided by the practitioner.

Some scientific findings have claimed that only about 5% of the population is capable of being hypnotized, which is the third myth on this list. Researchers have hit upon this low percentage because they have used the identical hypnosis procedure on all people without considering their individual traits. One hypnosis procedure for all is not a workable solution as different individuals fall under different personality types, and therefore are responsive to different methods.

Many people take hypnosis to be a form of meditation. But while hypnosis is an interaction technique, meditation is all about a state of mind and usually has nothing to do with communication. Trance too is not related to hypnosis at all. The person doesn’t communicate to achieve a state of trance, while hypnosis is impossible without communication.

Another misconception is that physical and behavioural alterations in an individual are not attainable through hypnosis training or hypnotherapy. Hypnosis obviously cannot attain something that is abnormal to the body. However, it can guide the body to a healthy shape through behavioural changes like eating less, and giving up smoking and other addictive habits by ensuring a high level of inspiration in a person.

Experiencing hypnotherapy is a good way to lead a richer and satisfying life, and therefore one should not pay attention to the myths, and go for hypnotic sessions with an unbiased mind.
